Careful when buying Amazon Warehouse “used” versions
The SONY NW-WS413BLM (blue) is by far the best performing model for the swim use case. It has no BT—no use under water—and the sound quality and power delivery is far better than the old 278 and the new $200 625 model (16GB) version.I had made a mistake of buying the “Very Good” condition open box item from Amazon Warehouse (Amazon.com, not 3rd party). Unfortunately, despite the inspected sticker, it was missing the Swim inserts and the stabilizer rubber band. With those models these are critical to equip because otherwise the device will short out in minutes due to water leakage. Only the “Swimming Buds” inserts have the thin film diaphragm that protects the driver assembly and electronics. You must also supposed to use one size bigger buds to swim vs the normal silicon buds with a hole on them for regular use.I had contacted SONY customer service and explained my situation. The inserts and the rubber band is NOT orderable from their parts catalog. After sending them a copy of my Amazon invoice they responded in 2 hours via email stating that because the item was marked “Very Good” it was considered out of warranty! I had sent them a rather pissed off response, because the unit was on perfect condition, other than the missing tiny rubber pieces the customer may have accidentally dropped when trying to repackage the box for return. Reluctantly called Amazon tech support and explained the situation and asked for a sealed unit to mitigate a similar issue. They sent a repackaged one instead, however, because all the components were individually packaged inside without any missing parts. I’m happy with the outcome.SONY’s lack of helpfulness had been very disappointing. Many times I had purchased open box items provided they were not damaged; most of the time these aren’t even store demos simply customer returns after they changed their minds. In this instance the unit wasn’t even taken out of the box or even charged, it was brand new. By not supplying these mass-produced tiny consumables—I consider them such because even though they provide 2 sets of 4 pairs—only one pair will fit each customer. If one gets stripped off accidentally, the device can no longer be used as there are no 3rd party replacement buds are available and SONY won’t sell them. These will just go to the landfills as a result of a shortsighted moronic support policy. They won’t even sell them—I would have gladly paid a few bucks plus shipping—but the answer was “No.”This is not the usual review just wanted to make sure everyone understood what they are buying and why some customers had bad experiences when they took their new Walkmans to the pool since most people don’t read manuals. At the $68 sale price brand new, these are a steal! That is until you can save your accessories from being lost or damaged over time.
