I had done my research just as many of you are probably doing now and had settled on these for a couple of different reasons. All the reviews I read seemed to say these things:
1) How comfortable they are to wear and how the sound doesn’t cause fatigue with long listening sessions.
2) Build quality and attention to detail is superb. You would actively have to try to break these things.
3) Amazing sound for a damn good price.
4) At 50ohm’s they can be operated reasonably well without an amp but should be used with one to get the full potential realized.
5) Open backed design have sound leakage so should only be used in seclusion.
6) Gateway drug to the audiophile world.
7) Not enough bass**
*These are all true to a T with the exception of the last about the bass.
-Comfort is insane. I hope as my first pair of serious headphones that these don’t ruin me in terms of comfort because I’ve been wearing these for hours now and neither the fit nor the sound is being close to causing any fatigue.
-These headphone are very sturdy. Even though they mostly consist of plastic as the main components used here, they are made to be light and intentionally durable. As for attention to details: From the silver accents to the stitching, to the little rubber pieces just behind the headphone earphones, to keep them from scratching against the band. Huge fan of the build quality.
-When I got them I plugged them directly into my IPhone 8 for a listen and with Spotify premium streaming at 328 kbit/s, I was pretty damn impressed. Keep in mind I’m not a trained audiophile but that being said I’m sure just about anyone can easily tell that the precision of the audio produced is front and center in these headphones. I heard/read the term “separation” thrown around a lot and oh heck yeah, now I know exactly what that is. The detail in albums I’ve listened to a million times is just so cool. I’d recommend Beck’s Morning Phase album as a good first listen.
-Now these sound pretty darn good without an amp but I have a Fiio q1 Mark 2 on the way so even though I can’t understand how the clarity could get even better, they could use a slight boost to the overall volume.
-Drug is working as predicted. What the heck do the 600’s and to even fathom the 800’s sounds like?
-Now in my opinion on most tracks I find the bass is more than enough. On Cut Copy’s Zonoscope album, the bass is not receded at all to me. It sounds right where it should be. It’s not booming in your face, it’s tight and punchy in such a pleasant precise way, with absolutely no distortion even at max volume. Now I put on Oliver Helden’s remix of Calvin Harris/ Dua Lipa’s “One Kiss” and that bass was actually booming front and center just due to the track. Not in a garish way. In a tight and punchy, anymore it would overwhelm the vocals and other parts of the track. I find the bass detailed and even on this track where it’s so bass heavy it way more than holds it own at the absolute highest level (without an amp) with zero distortion. In fact, in general, the higher the volume the more detail comes flying out of nowhere. Again, I tried the 598’s on Pnau’s “Changa” track and I don’t know what these other people are even remotely talking about with lack of bass.
So I’m conlusion, these are excellent and a steal at 169.00. And I don’t even have an amp yet. (0_o)
Headphone monitoring seems a challenge for some equipment with this type of input. I have antique Koss Pro4AA headphones from the old days (70's vintage top of the line) which suited me well until now. I tried them here, both through the amp and with the amp out of the loop, but they are heavy - cruel to my head, and sounded unacceptably muddy with live guitar tones. Based on advertising research alone, I got the Sennheiser 598SR open backed headphones and what a difference! ... The noise making Fender amp is now out of the loop and peace has returned to the domicile.
They are very light, comfortable, can handle the volume, and most important, sound super. I've played for up to 3 hours at a stretch without any discomfort. Although the perceived output is different than from the amp, it is more pleasant, clear and precise, at least with the clean tones I look for. The tone, effects and volume functions are handled with the IK Media Amplitude software emulation. In this use, I have an inexpensive amplified mixer, but experiment showed that the soundcard alone has the power to drive the headphones to any reasonable level.
In this use, I think the open backed headphones are preferable over closed backed headphones for several reasons. They sound 'airy'; I have no need to exclude any background noise; I can hear the telephone ringing and conversations even with the backing music a little loud; I can hear a metronome external to the computer. This version of the headphones is a 'Special Edition'; I think they are produced for Amazon sale exclusively, at a good price _$140_ compared to Sennheiser's other equivalent models. They are 'over the ear' designed, with soft padding, which contributes to their comfort. Be aware that the HD 598CR version is closed back, with different attributes.
I am not rating material quality or durability, just sound quality. They look durable enough with quality workmanship but - truth in reporting - this is a replacement set and in use just a couple days. The first set sounded equally good, but from the moment of first use, I noted a faint, annoying clicking sound in the left ear when I quickly turned my head. Either the removeable cord did not make good contact, or a possible manufacturing defect was at work. The distraction was unacceptable in headphones. I contacted Amazon the next day; an identical replacement was shipped out on overnight delivery and that set has no problems. Thank you Amazon for respecting a genuine function complaint.
Top reviews from other countries
Though using a proper headphone amp really brings out its full potential. But plugging them on a normal smartphone you are not going to miss much. I had Sony MDR Xb450 AP before these. These just blow them out in everything. The bass is better than the xb450and these are not known for bass!! instrument separation is superb, detailing is mind blowing, treble is also great.
Many reviewers claim these have low bass and its not totally true, its due to its open back design their bass is on lowere side. Coming from a xtra bass headphone (XB 450) I didn't felt these lack bass. I think reason is its an open back designed and made to sound more natural hence bass is not thumping. I used equalizer on pc and mobile and boosted up the bass at 30 hz and 60 hz by 6db and 4db respectively and bass was really good. It even felt close to having subwoofer like thump. So, Bass is there and its very good but not phenomenal. Mids and Highs are phenomenal on this. Detailing, imaging and instrument isolation is insanely good.
For anything better than this on a headphone you will need a lot more may be 3-4x more money. Infact Hd 598 are go to headset for audiophile and enthusiasts & are considered best deal at this price point from where point of diminishing return starts i.e you have to spend a lot of money to get slightly better sound. You will be hard pressed to find a better headphone at this price. Believe these are better than Audio Technica ATH M50x. Those don't have any sound-stage. These have the same level of detailing plus sound stage.
Also, one point should be noted ATH M50x is selling for 149-169 USD in USA. THese sell for 170-200 USD. These are costlier headphones than the M50x all around the world. Infact these are selling in India at a price lower than USA.
Which is surprising.
Just as the box says -- natural spatial sound experience
Natural means the sound is delivered as genuinely as your sound file and audio source could deliver*;
- It will deliver the closest representation of sound, compared to any other headphone of price under about 12k, and Amazon is selling this for just 7,999/- which is simply a steal.
- It does not overemphasize any part of the sound (i.e. bass/treble) and the whole frequency range gets satisfactorily represented**.
- The clarity is so good, that a knock in the door in a good quality video or sound clip actually gives you a spontaneous jolt to look towards the direction of the sound just to be sure.
Spatial refers to its sound-stage, which, is simply one of the 'widest' at any price point.
- The sound stage is also almost uniform and the mid-region is sufficiently loud. Thus when you listen to the classics or acoustic music of any type (as opposed to electric or electronic instruments), you get a feeling of sitting right in the middle of the "mehfil" (performance) with the instruments all around you.
- Another example of this sound stage - In a movie, a kid was shouting from a distance out of the scene, but it wasn't related to the story so I felt it must be someone 'out of my house' (!), later I had to rewind and check to confirm it was from the movie, I was bewildered !! Although the audio production has to push that kind of sound in the first place for you to get that effect but to be able to actually represent it so well, the HP needs to be darn good.
An 'open back' is a key design element that helps with these characteristics.
Negatives, really there are none if purchased after research, but I'll try and point some --
- BASS, at first, feels low, if you're coming from something bass-heavy like the HD 202II. Initially, I used to raise the bass a bit using EQ, the HD 598 responds very well and you get some deep bass. However, I eventually realized that the bass overpowers the other finer details and sacrifices the sound-stage no matter what gear you have, so I've stopped EQing it anymore, to realize that it does deliver satisfactory bass in songs like hip-hop, where the music production intends you to feel the punch. Most of us are just spoilt in our childhood with that bloated bass of cheap cans over every song.
- Its an OPEN BACK, its downsides are obvious. You're not supposed to take it to the streets, workplace, etc. the outside sound pours in making it impossible to enjoy the music. Even a loud fan or a TV nearby kind of ruins it. It's strictly for indoor quiet listening. The AC sounds from a sufficient distance are definitely manageable but you can still hear it even while the music is on so you get the idea. However, for a true-to-source sound, open-backs are a must, so you have to trade these drawbacks in for that quality.
- CLAMP-FORCE: a bit too tight, for me at least. I think the clamp does dampen over time but unlike what some reviewers over at " the other website" have mentioned, I'm not able to "forget" that I'm wearing it and I really craved that feeling after reading those reviews. Don't get me wrong though, it's really comfortable but I cannot go over 2 hours at a stretch without a breather.
-
Edit after about 4 or so months: the clamp finally seems to have come to a comfortable range, not on the forgetting level but it's better now.
-------
* sound file and audio source - Since the HD 598s have an impedance of 50 ohms, even though you can get a somewhat okay-ish sound with any mid-range phone, it is advisable to get yourself at least a cheap portable amp - Fiio A3, or a cheap DAC/amp (if there's a noticeable hiss in your sound) - Fiio Q1 or Fiio E10k, and good quality sound files -- mp3 of variable bit-rate averaging around 160 kbps or constant 320 kbps bit rate, but preferably lossless formats like .flac which are characteristically large sized ~ 20MB.
** Needs burn-in - for the first few days the mids sounded too recessed, songs sounded dark/lacked energy, but the sound has bloomed over time.
Thank you.
